About surdce dance collective
We are a British Bulgarian dance company of a new generation. We explore myth, heritage, mysticism and identity through a female gaze. Our two co-Artistic Directors Marchela Merchant and Stephanie Handjiiska are creating original work through the viewpoint of the female migrant and inspired by the female energy would like to think of a new world.
About Samodiva
Samodiva is the debut dance performance by surdce dance. This immersive dance work reconstructs and embodies the mythical female creatures called samodivas (самодиви in Bulgarian) - who roam free into the forests, declining patriarchal world order and living as one with nature, animals and plants. Director & choreographer Marchela-Vasilena Merchant challenges an international cast of 6 female dancers to embody the timeless wisdom of the samodivas in front of the London audience.
Samodiva is created with the financial support of Arts Council England.
